When you change career, any career, the support from your friends and family is crucial and is something I have naively just realised in this past year. As a kid I wasn’t all that popular so all the friends I do have, just a few more since I was a kid haha, I am very thank full to call them my friends and one of these ladies I am thank full to have in my life is Maya Wolff, a singer, song writer, dancer from Germany. I met Maya when I worked as an Animation workshop Leader for Animate & Create, Maya is an outgoing, creative soul and when she asked me to do her makeup for her promotional shoot I knew this was going to be a chance to get creative. We discussed over the course of a couple of weeks a possible designs, ending with something bold, possibly playing with texture and matching her black and white outfit. Playing with the idea of texture using Snazaroo Facepaint I tried to create Swan like feathers as a frame for the eyes with a bold black liner (Sleek, Black Gel Liner) finishing with Fake Lashes. The face we kept natural as the eyes had the statement we didn’t want too much going on, so Cheeks a soft Blush (Sleek, California) Nude Lip (Sleek, Browns and Pinks mixed) soft Brows (MAC, Brunette Brow Pencil) and to finish MAC Light Blot Powder. For Mayas hair she had invited a fantastic Hairdresser Vimal Chavda who gave Maya a bold bouncy hairstyle complementing her look.

On set Maya as always throws herself into action and is every photographers dream showing unique poses. This is where I first met the fantastic David Myers and his partner Christine, an extremely talented photographer who is a pleasure to work with. David and I swapped contacts for possible future work together which luckily wasn’t that long after. David contacted me via email about possible promotion work for an artist who is realising an album later that year, the artist was 80’s legend Nick Van Eede the lead of the band Cutting Crew who had a range of hits including ‘I Just Died in your Arms Tonight’ which is a TUNE!!! Extremely nervous I arrived at Nicks house with my kit and was greeted by his lovely dogs and Nick himself who was a delight as well as his lovely wife, offering me a cuppa I immediately felt at ease and on David Myers arrival myself and Nick went upstairs into for Makeup where we didn’t stop chatting from start to finish. I prepped Nicks skin with a matte primer which also shrunk visible pores (Benefit PoreFesional) I applied colour correcting primer on areas that seem a little red (No7 Green Corrector Primer) followed by a light foundation (No7 Intelligent Colour Foundation) and my trusty Derma Palette for any areas that needed a little extra attention. A light contour on just below the cheeks (Sleek, Contour Light) helps to define the area under harsh light, eyebrows I applied a little colour (Sleek, Natural Eyeshadow) and Carmex lip balm to soften lips. On Shoot I applied touch ups when needed and with the fabulous creativity from David and Nicks collaboration of ideas we came out with fantastic photos.

Not long after I received an email form Mr Myers once more for another promotional shoots for the upcoming singer Emily Adams who was on BBC Ones The Voice. Emily and her team were great and were very hospitable especially as this day in particular was extremely hot and I mean sweltering. Emily wanted a classic look, so kept the eye shadows to browns and beiges creating a soft smoky eye with a gentle touch of black on the corners (Sleek, Natural Palette) Black eyeliner with flick (MAC Creme Liner) finishing with false eyelashes to help the eye pop. For Cheeks a soft Blush (Sleek, California) and a nice popping red for her lips, I slightly went a little bigger than her natural lip amplifying her defined shape so it shows up on camera (MAC Red Lip Pencil, Sleek Paris Lip Colour). After finishing Emily’s Makeup I then defined Emily’s already curly hair with a little re-curling. David again took over and did an amazing job as always making the client feel at ease producing great photos.

David has provided me with fantastic work and it is all thanks to Maya and Networking proving networking is the key to building your portfolio of contacts and clients, plus you get to meet really lovely people!
